The History of Tripolia Bazar in Jaipur
Tripolia Bazar is one of the oldest and busiest markets in Jaipur, and it got its name from the Tripolia Gate. The word “Tripolia” comes from two Rajasthani words: “Tri,” which means three, and “Pol,” which means gates. The market is located near the Tripolia Gate, which was built in 1734.
The Tripolia Gate was once the main entrance to the City Palace, but it was only used by the royal family and their guests. Ordinary people couldn’t use this gate to enter the palace. Today, the gate is still important, as it is the entrance to both the City Palace and Jantar Mantar, a famous astronomical observatory in Jaipur.
However, after Jaipur became part of the larger state of Rajasthan, the Tripolia Gate was closed to the public. Now, people enter the City Palace through other gates, like the Virendra Pol or Udai Pol.
