History of Ram Niwas Garden (bagh)
Ram Niwas Garden is right across from the famous Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur. It was built in 1868 by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II. The garden was made to help people during a time when there wasn’t enough food, which is called a famine. A British officer named Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob designed the beautiful garden.
When it was first built, the garden covered 76 acres of land, but today it’s a little over 30 acres. The space became smaller because new buildings and visitor areas were added over time.
Back in those days, the garden had special rules. Regular people were allowed to visit during the day, but in the evening, it was only open to British families and the royal people of Jaipur. British officers, their guests, and members of fancy clubs would often come in the evenings to relax and have fun.
The streets outside the garden used to glow with soft lights at night, and horse carriages would line up along the road. There were even swings and play areas where children could have fun.
